Endogenous information acquisition in Bayesian games with strategic complementarities

چکیده
This paper studies covert (or hidden) information acquisition in common value Bayesian games of strategic complementarities. Using the supermodular stochastic order to arrange the structures of information increasingly in terms of preferences, we provide novel, easily interpretable conditions under which the value of information is globally convex, and study the implications in terms of the equilibrium con guration. Increasing marginal returns to information lead to extreme behavior in that agents opt either for the highest or the lowest quality signal. This result explains the complete information game as an endogenous outcome, and suggests the possibility of quite asymmetric information equilibria even in games that are themselves symmetric. Our analysis also enlightens the e¤ect of information on playersbehavior. JEL codes: C44, C72, D83.

Monotone equilibria in Bayesian games of strategic complementarities
For Bayesian games of strategic complementarities we provide a constructive proof of the existence of a greatest and a least Bayes-Nash equilibrium, each one in strategies monotone in type, if the payoff to a player displays increasing differences in own action and the profile of types and if the posteriors are increasing in type with respect to first-order stochastic dominance (e.g., if types ...
متن کاملInformation acquisition in global games of regime change
We study costly information acquisition in global games, which are coordination games where payo¤s are discontinuous in the unobserved state and in the average action of agents. We show that only symmetric equilibria exist and we provide su¢ cient conditions for uniqueness. We then characterize the value of information in this context and link it to the underlying parameters of the model. We ex...
متن کاملStrategic complementarities and nested potential games ∗ Hiroshi Uno
This paper shows that every finite game of weak strategic complementarities is a nested pseudo-potential game if the action set of one player is multi-dimensional and the action sets of the others are one-dimensional; the implication does not hold, however, if the action sets of more than two players are multi-dimensional. Moreover, the paper proposes a new class of games of nested strategic co...
متن کاملStrategic Knowledge Sharing in Bayesian Games: Applications
This paper studies the properties of endogenous information structures in some classes of Bayesian games in which a first stage of strategic information revelation is added. Sufficient conditions for the existence of perfectly revealing or non-revealing equilibria are characterized. In particular, the existence of a perfectly revealing equilibrium is demonstrated for linear Bayesian games with ...
متن کاملA characterization of strategic complementarities
I characterize games for which there is an order on strategies such that the game has strategic complementarities. I prove that, with some qualifications, games with a unique equilibrium have complementarities if and only if Cournot bestresponse dynamics has no cycles; and that all games with multiple equilibria have complementarities. As applications of my results, I show: 1. That generic 2X2 ...
